How can the "driving pleasure" be maintained if my car runs on its own in the future?

Our FEYNSINN colleagues are working on future scenarios for the use of Virtual Reality technologies in the field of autonomous driving and are using diverse user stories to illustrate how these technologies of the gaming sector can become part of the driving experience.

With their many years of expertise the FEYNSINN colleagues have already acquired a reputation among experts in the virtual reality environment, where they act as pioneers when it comes to implementing the technologies offered by these interactive media in new applications. One of these applications they have focused on is the driving of the future, in particular the new possibilities that autonomous driving opens up. The following is an outlook regarding new forms of communication and virtual entertainment.

The virtual co-driver

The fact that driving a car as such is to be autonomous and can also help to increase road safety, especially on longer journeys, is now widely accepted and approved by potential future users. As a driver, I have the option of no longer having to concentrate exclusively on the road and thus being able to dedicate myself to other things. But what could this be? After all, the ride should not become monotonous and therefore alternative entertainment is required.
This could be solved in the form of a virtual co-driver that looks as real as possible. FEYNSINN picked up the idea and created a virtual image in the form of a 3D point cloud instead of a normal video image, with which a relaxed conversation can now be held, but which could also provide valuable instructions in an emergency.

You can create the world the way you like it

But not only the driver's cabin, but also the environment can be individually designed using current VR technologies. FEYNSINN has used software technologies from the gaming sector and developed digital parallel worlds. In reality, the driver is driving on a boring motorway route, but is able to embed it visually in an exciting snowy landscape or even make a digital excursion to Mars.

There seem to be no limits to the virtual world

In general, these VR applications can be transferred not only to autonomous modes of transport on the road, but also to those on rails or in the air. In order to generate an image of the driver's environment as realistic as possible, not only sensors of the VR hardware but also various tracking systems are required, which supply GPS and other vehicle data and are integrated by the hardware. If, for example, the speed changes while driving, this change must also be visible in the digital parallel world. To integrate these data sources into an interconnected system, vehicle manufacturers also need to cooperate in order to establish the platform for this vehicle data to be transmitted to the VR system in real time.

Do you have an individual application for which you would like to integrate the latest AR / VR technologies? Or would you like to keep up to date about trends and technologies in the field of visualization?
